Kurt Weill Festival: The Road of Promise: UMD Symphony Orchestra

School of Music Sunday, October 7, 2018 7:30 pm Dekelboum Concert Hall,

The School of Music’s Kurt Weill Festival opens with The Road of Promise. This semi-staged oratorio features the combined forces of the UMD Symphony Orchestra, the Maryland Opera Studio, the UMD Concert Choir and SOM alumni. Adapted from the original 1937 work, The Road of Promise takes the audience through a journey that ends with renewal and hope. Set in a synagogue on a night of fearful waiting during the 'timeless night of Israel's persecution.' As the congregation gathers to wait what lies ahead, they turn to their Rabbi who begins to recount for them iconic stories from Jewish scripture. These biblical scenes unfold musically, set in motion by the Rabbi in a manner not unlike that of the Evangelist in the passions of J.S. Bach.
