"[NOI] is a program that is focused entirely on students who want an orchestral career,” said James Undercofler, the artistic director of the National Orchestral Institute. “It’s about becoming a multifaceted musician ... making the program as accurate and reflective as the current orchestral scene as we can.”
Dr. Gerald Fischbach, Professor of Violin and String Pedagogy at the UMD School of Music, is one of the world’s most respected string pedagogues. After 33 years as professor at the UMD, he retires at the end of the Spring 2013 semester.
Trumpet professor Chirs Gekker was unanimously selected by the Maryland Classic Youth Orchestra (MCYO) Board of Directors to receive the 2013 MCYO Chester J. Petranek Community Award. This award is presented annually to an organization or individual for outstanding community service in an enriching the musical life of the Washington Metropolitan Area.
Professor Linda Mabbs has been awarded UMD’s 2012-2013 Board of Regents Faculty Award for Mentoring, the University’s most prestigious faculty service award. Chancellor William E. Kirwan remarked during the presentation that although this award was given in recognition of her mentoring of students and faculty, Mabbs could have easily been recognized for her scholarly and artistic work as well.
