Cello and violin? Maurice Ravel chose that unusual medium to pay homage to Claude Debussy while, for American composer Maria Newman, it provided the ideal sound for an impassioned lament on the plight of a fellow artist during the height of the AIDS crisis. Zoltán Kodály’s exuberant essay on Hungarian folk melodies brings the program to a life-affirming close.
