COLLEGE PARK, Md.—The University of Maryland School of Music (SOM) has appointed Sarah Frisof associate professor of flute. Dr. Frisof will begin teaching in the fall of 2017.

“Dr. Frisof brings a brilliant array of expertise and experience as both a player and as a teacher to the flute studio at Maryland, a versatility which promises to contribute in numerous ways to our school,” says Mark Hill, SOM oboe professor and division coordinator of winds and percussion. “Her flute playing is absolutely virtuosic as is borne out in her fine recordings and by the excellent ensembles and orchestras with which she has performed, and we are excited to have her join our full-time faculty.”

Equally at home in the solo, chamber and orchestral stages, Dr. Frisof is a passionate flutist and educator.  As a soloist, she was the second-prize winner of both the National Flute Association Young Artist Competition and the Heida Hermanns International Woodwind Competition, and was a semi-finalist in the 2009 Kobe International Flute Competition. An active orchestral musician, Dr. Frisof is Principal Flute of the Dallas Wind Symphony, and has appeared with the Chicago Symphony, Boston Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Dallas Symphony and many others.

An enthusiastic educator, Dr. Frisof has taught in a variety of diverse settings, including as a faculty member at the Interlochen Arts Camp, the Music in the Mountains Conservatory and the Blanche Bryden Summer Institute. She has taken her passion for education to global audiences, working with young students in Zimbabwe and Brazil. She frequently gives masterclasses at universities across the United States.

A graduate of the Eastman School, The Juilliard School and the University of Michigan, she was formerly the assistant professor of flute at the University of Kansas.
