Venues

Camp experiences take place in the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center on the College Park campus. Rehearsals occur in the acclaimed School of Music facilities, with the final performance to take place in the Elsie & Marvin Dekelboum Concert Hall, one of 6 venues located in the Center.

Schedule: Band

The initial meeting will take place on Sunday, July 22 from 3-6pm with a brief orientation followed by small group meetings and ensemble rehearsals. Students will be able to become acclimated with the facility during this time and will meet the faculty who will be teaching their classes throughout the week.

Monday - Friday the program will run daily from 9:00-3:30. The schedule will look something like this:

On Friday, the program will run as usual from 9-3:30. Additionally, the final Concert will take place beginning at 4:15PM in the Dekelboum Concert Hall. Students should wear the camp T-shirt (included in the cost of the camp), khaki or tan pants, shorts or skirt, and shoes of their choice for the concert.

Highlights

Unique features of the camp include:

  • serves primarily a middle school population (adolescents, roughly ages 10-16)
  • multiple levels of collaboration

  • students from public, private, and home schooling situations brought together
  • collaborative teaching by university faculty, public and independent school teachers, university graduate and undergraduate students
  • band, string, and vocal musicians interact in enrichment classes and in other settings throughout the day
  • opportunity to rehearse and perform in a state-of-the-art performance facility
  • non-auditioned format stimulates and nurtures growth in musicianship through ability-sensitive teaching and peer mentoring opportunities for more advanced musicians
  • members of staff instruct, assist, and perform alongside student musicians
  • individualized instruction through small group lessons
  • elective enrichment classes in technology, guitar, composition, world drumming, jazz, and more.

Elective Class Descriptions (students will take 3 of the following classes)

A Cappella Singing: Collegiate-style a cappella singing comes to SYMC just in time for the 2012 camp. Be a part of it!

Beginning Instrument Lab:Still our most popular elective! Learn to play the tuba, viola, oboe or string bass. In this class you will learn the basics of playing a new brass, woodwind or string instrument each or spend more time with a single instrument. (Instruments are provided by the camp)

Camp Chorus: Everybody Sing! Camp faculty will direct all interested campers in experiencing and performing a number of musical styles.

Composition: An introduction to the art of creating your own music. Students will use non-traditional sounds and their own instruments and voices to experience the joy of making their own original music.

Conducting: Learn to lead a band, orchestra, or chorus to take over when you director is away!

Fiddling for Strings (strings week only): There's more than one way to play a string instrument! Learn to play traditional fiddle music on your violin, viola, cello, or even your bass.

Jazz Improvisation: Explore America's classical music by experiencing and developing practical skills needed for playing in multiple jazz styles including swing, blues, and rock.

Keyboarding: Want to impress your fellow music students at school next fall? Learn to play the keyboard! For beginners and near beginners.

Movies and Music: Explore how composers and film makers use music to enhance the on-screen action. Create your own soundtrack to a popular movie!

Musical Theater: Lights, Camera, Action! Prepare to dance, sing and act in this introduction to musical theater.

Play by Ear: This class celebrates the art of listening as you and your friends recreate your favorite songs without notated music.

Practice Makes Perfect: Learn methods for making the most of your individual practice time. Bring your instrument with you as time will be available to implement these techniques.

Guitar: Learn to play (and sing) some of your favorite songs in this beginning level guitar class. (Instruments are provided by the camp but you may bring your own).

Songwriting:Write the next Top 40 hit! Only your imagination knows how far you will go to develop lyrics and music to create an original song.

Technology: Explore software and hardware used in creating music of your own. Work alone and/or in a group. Burn your song/s to CD and take home. Hands on experience.

World Drumming: Explore percussion instruments from around the world using a unique drum circle environment.
