Dear Students, Parents and Colleagues,
Welcome to the 10th Annual Summer Youth Music Camp at the University of Maryland! We are excited about the possibilities that lie before us as we approach the 2012 camp. The overwhelming popularity of the camp allows us to continue to expand our offerings. The Band Camp will take place from July 22 - 27 while the Vocal and String Camp will occur July 29 - August 3. All events will take place once again in spectacular Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center.
We know that you have choices of what to do each summer and are excited that you are thinking about our camp at Maryland. We expect over 300 musicians to enroll in the two camps, which are open to all band, string, and vocal musicians entering grades 5-10 in 2012. Band and string musicians must have at least one year of experience while vocal musicians need no formal group or individual vocal training (though it is recommended). No audition is required though teachers may listen to students play on the first day to place them on the appropriate part or in the appropriate ensemble. To accommodate our growing numbers we plan to offer three bands and two string orchestras along with our vocal offerings and elective classes.
Please note that the camp has limited enrollment and students will be registered on a first come, first served basis according to each instrument and grade level. In order to secure a place in the camp, especially for students who play very popular instruments such as flute, saxophone, or percussion, please register as soon as possible.
In addition to daily rehearsals and small group lessons, a distinctive component of the our camp at UM is that students will elect to participate in several enrichment classes that focus on jazz, technology, conducting, musical theater, composition, and more. Our new songwriting class proved to be quite popular in 2011. For 2012, we are hoping to offer the following new classes: Movies and Music, Fiddling (for string players), and a cappella singing. Many of our fine faculty will return for 2012 and we hope that each of you will join us for our 10th summer!
For those of you who have moved beyond the 10th grade, we are again offering Junior Counselor Positions to those who have previously attended the camp. You will assist directors, teachers, and younger students throughout the week in classes and rehearsals. See the registration page for an application.
See you in July! Michael P. Hewitt, Director
