General Admission Info

The School of Music recruits from today's best and brightest young musicians to build the next class of stand-out performers, scholars, and educators. As a mid-size school with competitive standards, we limit our enrollment to focus on quality. And we seek out talented candidates who will shine as individuals while also contributing to the School's vibrant community.

Admission to the University of Maryland School of Music is a two-step process. All applicants must apply to the University of Maryland for admission, and also the School of Music. Click here for information on how to apply and links to the applications.

For specific course information, find your prospective program in the School of Music's Academic Handbooks.

Admission Rates

Admissions rates vary by instrument, but in a typical year approximately 40% of applicants are admitted into their chosen programs. In a very competitive instrument or program, however, fewer than 10% of applicants may be admitted. We typically receive around 400 undergraduate applications for an incoming freshman class of 60 students, and about 500 graduate applications for an incoming class of about 60 students.

The Undergraduate application deadline is November 1, and annual auditions follow in late January. Undergraduate applications should be submitted by November 1 or earlier.

The Graduate application deadline is December 1, and annual auditions follow in late January. Graduate applications should be submitted by December 1 or earlier. (Please note, graduate applicants in the music education area have a preferred deadline of January 17 for best consideration.)

For those whose programs require an audition, we will send most audition notifications via email on or before December 20, 2019. The majority of the undergraduate decisions will be released on or around February 15, 2020. Graduate decisions for most programs are released on or around March 15, 2020.
