The 2012 National Orchestral Institute will accept applications and hear auditions for the following instruments: flute, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, bass trombone, tuba, harp, percussion, violin, viola, cello, and bass.

All musicians who are between the ages of 18 and 28 on May 31, 2012 are eligible to apply. Application instructions appear below. (For audition locations and dates, visit NOI's Audition page.)


Application Procedure for Live Auditions

  1. Complete the ONLINE application. Click START to begin the process. You will receive a confirmation email after submitting your application. Audition times will be posted to our website two weeks prior to your requested audition date.
  2. Bring one copy of your resume to the audition.
  3. A letter of recommendation is optional and should be brought to the audition. Please DO NOT mail your letter of recommendation in advance.

Application Procedure for Recorded Auditions

    Please Note: All percussion applicants are required to submit a recorded audition. String players that live more than 200 miles from their closest audition site are also permitted to submit a recorded audition. Recorded auditions will NOT be accepted for woodwind, brass, or harp applicants. No exceptions.

  1. Complete the ONLINE application. Click START to begin the process.
  2. You will receive a confirmation email after completing step 1. Please note the confirmation number included in the email. You will need this for the next step.
  3. Submit your audition via ArtsApp using the NOI portal at: http://artsapp.com/noi/
  4. Place the confirmation number in the form where requested.
  5. Upload your video audition files to the ArtsApp website.
  6. All recorded auditions must be uploaded by 5pm on February 15, 2012.

Program Information for 2012 Accepted Members:

Dates: Musicians who are accepted into NOI are expected to attend all rehearsals and performances for the entire festival, May 31 - June 30, 2012.

Fees: All participants are required to pay a non-refundable program fee of $250.00 due upon acceptance. This fee is required of all participants, and cannot be applied toward other program costs.

Room: Those participants that would like to have housing provided by NOI will be charged as follows:

    Double-Occupancy Room (No Kitchen) $395.00

    Double-Occupancy Room* (With Kitchen) $495.00

    Single-Occupancy Room* (No Kitchen) $495.00

    Single-Occupancy Room* (With Kitchen) $595.00

All rooms are located on the University of Maryland campus in an air-conditioned dormitory or apartment.

*Single rooms and apartments with kitchens are limited in number and will be filled on a first come, first served basis. You will select your housing options upon acceptance in to the program.

Board: NOI does not provide a meal plan for participants due to the large number of eating establishments located on the University of Maryland campus and surrounding area. However, an optional meal plan is available for purchase through University Meal Deal, a third party provider.

Parking: Participants that wish to park their car on the University of Maryland campus will be required to purchase a parking permit. More information will be made available regarding the cost and specific parking locations upon acceptance.

Internet: Wireless internet access is available to participants throughout the UM campus for nominal fee.
