International applicants: The School of Music’s English proficiency requirements are different than the university’s requirement. Graduate applicants who are not native speakers of English must submit a passing TOEFL score in order to be scheduled for an audition. This requirement will be waived for applicants who have earned an undergraduate degree from an institution in the United States or another approved English-speaking country. Waivers will only be granted if at least three years of the undergraduate education took place at an English-speaking institution. Graduate degrees or performance certificates or diplomas will not exempt an applicant from submitting a passing TOEFL score. Please go here for more specific information.

The School of Music will allow all graduate applicants whose overall TOEFL score is 90 or higher to audition, but in order to be considered for admission a fully passing TOEFL score must be submitted no later than February 15, 2018. Auditions will not be scheduled for applicants with an overall TOEFL score lower than 90.

Audition notifications will be sent via email on or before December 21, 2018.

String Quartet Fellowship

The String Quartet Fellowship is available for Fall 2019. All prospective students interested in being considered for the string quartet fellowship must apply as an individual to a degree program (MM or DMA), and also submit the requirements listed below in order to be considered for the live audition for the string quartet fellowship. Learn more about the fellowship here.

Applications are accepted from individuals and from pre-formed quartets.

For preformed groups who are accepted for a live audition, we will work with you to find a time for your group to come and audition live, both for your individual auditions for degree admission consideration, and for your group audition for fellowship consideration. Typically, the auditions must be completed by mid-February.

For individuals who are selected for a live audition, you MUST be available for a live audition on Sunday, February 10, 2019. There will be no alternate days, or opportunities to audition via recording if you are accepted for a live audition.

Prescreen requirements for String Quartet Fellowship

The recording should be submitted as a part of the School of Music application. One member of the group may upload the video wtih their music application.
