The University of Maryland Percussion Studio has had a long-standing commitment to excellence. Upon John Tafoya's arrival in 1999, he worked very hard to build a well-respected, world-class program. I am very proud to be given the opportunity to continue his good work and build on the traditions that he created. Here at the University of Maryland, we have everything you need to become a complete percussionist. Our very talented and diverse faculty has a significant footprint in the DC/MD/VA percussion community, with over 75 years of on-the-job experience. During your time at UMD, we will cover every aspect of the percussive landscape, including orchestral percussion and timpani, solo, chamber and percussion ensemble repertoire, drumset as well as Latin, jazz and world percussion.
We offer the following degrees: BA, BM, BME, MM and DMA. Each degree is specially tailored to prepare you for your desired career path, whether that's performing in a symphony orchestra or grooming our future percussion leaders in a high school or collegiate setting as an instructor.
All lessons, performances and percussion related activities take place in our state of the art facility, the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. Feel free to take a look at our dedicated percussion studios and instructional facilities as well as some of the instruments that we own.
Thanks for taking the time to see what we have to offer. I'm very excited to usher in this new era of percussion excellence here in College Park. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
