Recent Accomplishments of University of Maryland Theory/Composition Students and Alumni

Current Students

William Kenlon (DMA Composition) has maintained an active career as a composer in the Washington DC and Boston areas throughout his tenure at Maryland. In 2015, he received the Walsum award for "Five Fantasies on Bach Chorales," and received performances of other works by Opera On Tap (Washington DC), through the Church of the Advent concert series (Boston), at the Fresh Inc. Festival (Chicago), and as a fellow of the Cortona Sessions for New Music (Italy).

Eric Pazdziora (DMA Composition) began his studies at the University of Maryland in Fall 2015 with a teaching assistantship in the Theory/Composition division. His work includes several published choral arrangements, art songs, and articles. Reviewers described his independent album Hymns and Lamentations as “an instant classic” (Global Christian Worship, July 2015). In September 2015 his song cycle Four Songs from “Wild Earth” was premiered at Connecticut College by Dr. Wendy Moy (soprano) and Patricia Harper (alto flute). Geoff Sheil (DMA Composition) was featured on two 2015 CDs, one by the English saxophonist Alastair Penman entitled Electric Dawn and another by Dutch pianist Daan Van den Hurk entitled Insert Coin Here. He has been commissioned by German percussionist Max Gaerter for two works as a part of his 2015 percussion and electronics series. Nolan Veldey (MM Composition) graduated from Lawrence University in 2013, where he received the Phi Kappa Lambda composition award and the Student Composer Orchestral Performance Award. He also received a merit scholarship in fine arts from the International Education of Students Abroad, which allowed him to study in Milan, Italy with Giovanni Verrando.

Henry Ross Wixon (DMA Composition) attended a recording session of Sparkling Dialogue (solo trombone and string orchestra) in October 2015; the work was commissioned by Bryan Bourne for his upcoming CD. Ross’s Evening on the Town for trumpet and piano will be featured on the International Trumpet Guild Conference's New Works Recital in June 2016. Prior to his doctoral studies at Maryland, Ross held adjunct teaching positions at the Community College of Baltimore County and Coppin State University in Maryland.

Alumni

Michael Boyd (BM Composition 2000; DMA Composition, 2006), Assistant Professor of Music at Chatham University, is a composer, scholar, and experimental improviser. His music embraces experimental practices such as installation, multimedia, and performance art. Boyd’s concert works and installations have been presented in a variety of venues and included on SCI and SEAMUS recording projects. His essays on Roger Reynolds’s music have been published in Notes and Tempo, and an article about one of his performance-based installations appeared in Perspectives of New Music. A member of the Wilkins Township Board of Commissioners, Boyd was included in Pittsburgh Magazine’s 2013 “40 Under 40.”

Alexandra T Bryant (DMA Composition, 2015) has been hailed by the Cleveland Plain Dealer as a “promising composer,” lauded for her “ability to convey myriad moods through clear thematic materials and coloristic contrasts.” She has received commissions from the Kronos Quartet; William Preucil; the Cleveland, Santa Fe, and Tacoma Youth Orchestras; the Aeolus Quartet in collaboration with the Friends of Chamber Music of Reading through a grant through the NEA; and the Metropolitan Ballet Theatre. Bryant holds degrees from the Cleveland Institute and Rice University as well as the University of Maryland, where she received the Flagship Fellowship and Dean’s Fellowship.

Cedric Dent (Ph.D. Theory, 1997) is a Professor in the School of Music at Middle Tennessee State University (Murfreesboro, TN). He is also an emeritus member of the vocal group TAKE 6, which was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of fame in Nashville in 2014. Most recently, the Nashville Symphony Orchestra commissioned a work from Dent for orchestra and chorus to be premiered in 2016. As an alumnus of the University of Michigan (1985), Dent was selected to receive the 2016 Hall of Fame Award from the School of Music, Theatre & Dance Alumni Society. 

Martín Gendelman (DMA Composition, 2007) is Assistant Professor and Head of Music Composition and Theory at Georgia Southern University. Over the past decade, his music and cross-disciplinary works have been performed in concerts, festivals, and conferences across the United States, Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East. Recent activities include performances by the New York-based Da Capo Chamber Players and the Meitar Ensemble (Tel Aviv, Israel), among others. Matthew Halper (DMA Composition, 1996) is Professor of Music at Kean University and Artistic Director of Ars Vitalis: The NJ New Music Forum. His music has received performances in leading venues such as Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. Recent recordings include his Trio on New American Masters, Vol. IV (TROY1339), a work that received its Asian premiere in October 2015, including a performance at the National Concert Hall of Taiwan in Taipei. Upcoming premieres include the April 2016 performance of Shadow on the Andes for string orchestra, commissioned by the Arco Ensemble, Paul Lustig Dunkel, conductor.

Patricia Julien (Ph.D. Music Theory, 2003), Professor of Music at the University of Vermont, composes original music for live theatrical productions, including a recently produced new musical, O, Caligula!. She also writes for mixed-voice choral ensembles, solo voice and piano, orchestra, contemporary chamber ensembles, small jazz combos, and big band. Patricia is an active jazz flutist and has recorded three CDs as leader of the jazz quartet Patricia Julien Project. Her articles and reviews appear in Theory and Practice, the Annual Review of Jazz Studies, Jazz Perspectives, Jazz Education Journal, and the Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy.

Ben Levy (Ph.D. Music Theory, 2006) is an Assistant Professor of Music Theory at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His article “Shades of the Studio: Electronic Influences on Ligeti’s Apparitions,” published in Perspectives of New Music, won the Society for Music Theory’s Emerging Scholar Award in 2011; other publications appear in Twentieth-Century Music, The Contemporary Music Review, and in volumes of collected essays. Before arriving at UCSB, Levy served on the faculties of Arizona State University, Towson University, the University of Maryland, and the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University.

Liviu Marinescu (DMA Composition, 2000) is Professor and Chair of Music Composition and Theory at California State University Northridge, as well as a faculty member at the Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles. His works have been performed by the Cleveland Chamber Symphony, Orchestra 2001, Czech Bohuslav Martinu Symphony, and the Bucharest National Radio Orchestra. He has received awards from ASCAP, the Fromm Music Foundation at Harvard University, the Meet the Composer Fund, and the American Music Center. His music is available on the Centaur, Navona, and Capstone Records labels.

Mark Nowakowski (DMA Composition, 2013) currently teaches at Benedictine University in Lisle, IL. His music has been performed by the Kronos Quartet, Cleveland Chamber Symphony, Voxare Quartet, Canton Symphony Orchestra, Monteverdi Cello Octet, Cracow Brass Quintet, and others. His “O Sacrum Convivium” has been performed on national television and around the DC area by the Dominican House of Studies Schola, which has recorded it as part of their forthcoming album. Nowakowski is also an active writer about new music, music technology, and culture for the Communities Digital News.

Jennifer Sterling Snodgrass (Ph.D. Theory, 2002) is an Associate Professor of Music Theory and Director of Graduate Studies at Appalachian State University. Her research has been published in the Journal of Technology in Music Learning, Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy, Sacred Music, College Music Symposium, and the Music Educators Journal. Snodgrass is the co-author of Fundamentals of Music Theory (Pearson, 2013) and author of Contemporary Musicianship: Analysis and the Artist (Oxford University Press, 2015). She currently serves as the Vice President of the College Music Society and Co-Chair of Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy Online.

Asha Srinivasan (DMA Composition, 2008) is an Associate Professor of Music at Lawrence University in Wisconsin. Her music has been performed by renowned ensembles such as Alarm Will Sound and Da Capo Players and is heard frequently in national and international venues.  Honors include the 2011 Thailand International Composition Competition, Flute New Music Consortium, BMI’s Women’s Music Commission, the Flute/Cello Commissioning Circle, and the Walsum and Prix d'Eté competitions. Erich Stem (DMA Composition, 2003) is Associate Professor of Music at Indiana University Southeast. His music has been performed by groups such as the Minnesota Orchestra, Richmond Symphony, Aurelia Saxophone Quartet, counter)induction and the Cadillac Moon Ensemble and has appeared on labels such as Living Artist Recordings, Challenge Records and New Dynamic Records. Stem continues to write for a variety of ensembles and artists including the SOLI Chamber Ensemble, Juventas New Music Ensemble, saxophonist Johan van der Linden and flutist Lindsey Goodman. He is an associate composer of the group A/Tonal (www.atonalensemble.com) and is currently composing orchestral works for the America By project (www.AmericaBy.com).

Jerry Tabor (MM in Composition, 1994; DMA Composition, 1997) is Professor of Music at Salisbury University in Maryland. At Maryland, he studied electroacoustic composition with Thomas DeLio. Tabor has published some of his doctoral research in the book Otto Laske: Navigating New Musical Horizons (Greenwood, 1999). He has received numerous commissions from well-known soloists and ensembles who are interested in his experimental compositional perspective, which extends into the highly customized notational techniques found in his scores. Tabor recently become the owner and director of the respected 27-year-old label Neuma Records and of a music publishing house he created as an expansion of the label.

Dale Trumbore (BM Composition, 2009) has received numerous commissions, performances and awards from organizations including ACDA, ACME, the Boston New Music Initiative, Center City Opera Theater, Chanticleer, The Esoterics, Inscape Chamber Orchestra, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, The Hollywood Master Chorale, Northwest Symphony Orchestra, The Singers–Minnesota Choral Artists, and VocalEssence. Trumbore is Composer in Residence with Nova Vocal Ensemble (Glendale, CA), and her compositions are published with Boosey & Hawkes and G. Schirmer. Hear Trumbore's music at www.daletrumbore.com.

Kristian Twombly (BM Composition, 1999; DMA Composition, 2004) is currently Associate Professor of Music at St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minnesota. The undergraduate Composition and New Media program at SCSU, which he helped to design, is the largest in the state. Recently, his work The ship was performed at NYCEMF. Twombly is a member of the Bay Players Experimental Music Collective; a videorecording of his works will be featured on an upcoming release on NEUMA. He also serves as the Strategic Planning Chair at SCSU, for which his work on institutional change has gained recognition from HLC and AAC&U.
