Student Degree Recital: Hayden Kramer M.A. Musicology

College of Arts and Humanities | School of Music | The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center Friday, April 8, 2022 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, Gildenhorn Recital Hall

Join us in person at The Clarice or watch the livestream from the comfort of your home.

In this recital, Hayden Kramer will lecture on and perform six works by the Black American bandmaster and composer Francis Johnson (1792–1844). Born free in Philadelphia, Johnson made a successful career as the city's most in-demand bandleader, both for his work with military bands and high-society dance bands. Working from published piano reductions and manuscript sources, Kramer has arranged seminal Johnson pieces for contemporary performance, the majority of which have never been recorded or perhaps not even performed since Johnson's day. Additionally, the recital will feature period instruments as well as Johnson's original dance figures for his "Voice Quadrilles," an important set of dances that his band performed in London and across the United States. Join us for an exciting evening of music, history, and dance!

Performing in this recital are Alex Scott, flute, Greg Szwarcman, violin, Emma Selmon, clarinet, Theresa Bickler, cornet, Kat Robinson, horn, John McGovern, percussion, Jason Amis, percussion, Allie Pecoraro, voice, and The Francis Johnson Quadrille Dancers.
