Career Chat: Art Therapy

Art | College of Arts and Humanities | School of Music | School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies Friday, February 11, 2022 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm Virtual

Learn more about the ways to combine a passion for art with career interests in helping people through the dynamic field of art therapy! This special chat will feature two art therapists:

Luisa Mariño (she/her): Luisa is an art therapist and visual artist, passionate about learning and specializing through her art therapy practice in the contexts of education and community-building work. She has been able to do this by partnering with a variety of communities through her organization, ArtSpace Therapy, such as in programs for permanent and transitional housing, incarceration and addiction recovery, teen motherhood groups, Latina moms support circles, among others. Prior experience also includes work with immigrants and refugees, oncology patients and their families and school students of all ages. You can find out more about ArtSpace Therapy at https://artspacetherapy.org/

Lauren Schlenger (she/her): Lauren is an art therapist currently working in a pediatric medical art therapy setting, providing emotional support to patients and families receiving medical care on a Hematology, Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant unit. Her ongoing work also includes a group private practice setting. Through art therapy, Lauren aims to provide individualized, trauma-informed support. Lauren is also passionate about facilitating therapeutic artmaking experiences that allow the visual art process to feel more accessible and approachable. Lauren's previous art therapy experience includes work in school and psychiatric settings, grief-focused work and support for populations including military families and women experiencing perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. Lauren's overall experience includes 10+ years of community-focused work, using visual art to build connections and create change. You can learn more about the Tracy's Kids art therapy program at https://www.tracyskids.org/.

After a moderated conversation, there will be time for student Q&A. Please be sure to RSVP in order to receive the Zoom link.
