Robert Austin Boudreau and Jason Fettig M.M. ’05, guest conductors
Michael Votta, Jr., and Andrea Brown, faculty conductors

The culmination of the UMD School of Music’s annual Wind Conducting Workshop, this concert will feature the return of two special guests: orchestral conducting alumnus Jason Fettig M.M. ’05 and Robert Austin Boudreau, acclaimed music director of the American Wind Symphony Orchestra (AWSO). Boudreau served as interim band director prior to the appointment of Michael Votta, Jr. UMD School of Music Director Gregory Miller, Tuba Lecturer Willie Clark and Votta are all alumni of AWSO.

Back in its day, AWSO was a unique ensemble that toured various cities within the U.S. aboard a barge named Point Counterpoint II, which traveled to a suitable river bed in a town and performed a concert from its floating stage. This special barge also housed an art gallery below deck. In addition to leading this ensemble, Boudreau has commissioned over 400 new works for wind orchestra by diverse composers stationed all over the globe. Two pieces from his collection—Lubos Fiser’s Report and Jacques Castérède’s Divertissement d'été (Summer Pastimes)—will be featured on this concert, joining the many works that the UMD Wind Orchestra (UMWO) has performed over the years from Boudreau’s commissions. Richard Wagner’s Trauermusik (Funeral Music), Percy Grainger’s Lincolnshire Posy and Richard Strauss’ Suite, Op. 4 will also be featured on the program.

Program:

Lubos Fiser: Report
Richard Wagner: Trauermusik (Funeral Music)
Percy Grainger: Lincolnshire Posy
Richard Strauss: Suite, Op. 4
Jacques Castérède: Divertissement d'été (Summer Pastimes)
