Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection”: UMD Symphony Orchestra and UMD Concert Choir

College of Arts and Humanities | School of Music | The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center Friday, February 25, 2022 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, Dekelboum Concert Hall or Livestream on Vimeo

David Neely, conductor
Rehanna Thelwell, mezzo-soprano
Amber Monroe, soprano

The UMD Symphony Orchestra celebrates its spring return with Gustav Mahler’s “Resurrection Symphony.” Mahler’s transcendent masterwork grapples with the meaning of life and death while culminating in redemption. Reminiscent of a funeral march, it took Mahler a period of seven years to compose all five of the movements of this epic. The final movement and centerpiece of the symphony is a beautiful choral work that will feature the UMD Concert Choir along with soloists Rehanna Thelwell, mezzo-soprano, and Amber Monroe, soprano, who are both Cafritz Young Artists with the Washington National Opera at the Kennedy Center. Don't miss this unique opportunity to experience the work of over 100 string, wind, percussion, voice and keyboard students together on the Dekelboum stage.

UMD Choral Activities
Led by Edward Maclary, the choral ensembles have achieved international renown and offer a wide array of experiences with music encompassing all styles and eras. In addition to this season’s on campus performances, the UMD Concert Choir participates in annual collaborations with both the National Symphony Orchestra and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.
