J.S. Bach, known as the great master, wrote more than 200 cantatas, and UMD Choral Activities aims to sing them all in this series of short performances led by conductors in the graduate program. Conducted by Matthew Goinz, this performance will feature Du Hirte Israel, höre (You Shepherd of Israel, hear), BWV 104.

This cantata premiered in 1724, Bach’s second year as cantor at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, a position he would hold until his death in 1750. Written for Misericordias Domini—the second Sunday after Easter in the Lutheran church calendar—Bach’s gentle musical pastorale creates a soothing atmosphere of refreshment and renewal.

The cantata will be followed with informal performances by voice and opera students.
