Patrick Edgar Franklin Allies

Patrick Allies, a singer-conductor-musicologist from London, charmed us with quiet competence. An outstanding TA, Patrick mastered early theory; gospel, and other American musics; and world music: with an M.A. thesis on a king’s visit to Bruges that sparked the English choral tradition and paper on Russian choirs in Queen Victoria’s England—Patrick continues at Oxford University for his Ph.D.

M.A. in Ethnomusicology

Allison's masterful master's thesis is titled “The Women and Taiko Movement: Questioning Gendered Leadership through Embodied Practice.” Despite the pandemic, Allison captured the movement during a key period of  transition—attending webinars and virtual concerts, and conducting dozens of Zoom interviews with organizers, composers and performers. A job superbly done, Allison. You will be missed!

It has been my great pleasure to work with Allie over the last two years! Deeply committed to making music education more inclusive, she wrote an insightful thesis on the Smithsonian Folkways Learning Pathways project, an attempt by the institution to rectify inequities in K-12 music education. I’m thrilled that Allie will be continuing her studies at UMD, in the Ph.D. ethnomusicology program!
