MASTER OF ARTS

The Master of Arts (M.A.) in music degree is designed for graduate students who desire focused, academic study in ethnomusicology, music education, music history and literature or music theory within the context of a major research university.

All of our M.A. degrees can be completed in two years and require thirty credit hours of graduate-level work. Most M.A. degrees culminate in a thesis project, although many allow students to select an alternative non-thesis option involving additional coursework and a smaller project.

Curriculum

Requirements for the M.A. degrees vary by emphasis, but M.A. students generally complete thirty credits divided between:

  • An introductory research course
  • Required disciplinary courses
  • Electives
  • Thesis research or additional non-thesis coursework
