Curt Armbruster (DMA Percussion) has been offered a one-year contract as Acting Associate Timpanist / Section Percussionist with the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra for their 2016 / 2017 season.
Robert Schroyer (DMA Percussion) has been selected as a finalist in the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) 2016 Marimba Solo Competition. Bobby was selected as one of four finalists to compete at PASIC in November 2016 where he will play before a panel of distinguished marimba soloists and percussion professionals from around the world. Schroyer was was also invited to join the Percussive Arts Society Contest and Audition Procedures Committee as a committee member.
Anto Meliksetian (BM Cello) and Brian Kim (BM Violin) performed Octavio Vazquez’s Guernica (UMD Alumni) during Califonia Summer Music at the Green Music Center at Sonoma State University on July 15th, 2016.
TEMPO completed their 72-Hour composition challenge thanks to the hard work of the composers and the musicians. They premiered their works on September 9th, 2016 at the NextNOW Fest.

This summer, The Phoenix, an orchestral work by Mark Edwards Wilson (Associate Professor, Composition), was performed at the Chautauqua Festival (Chautauqua, NY), Timothy Muffitt, conducting. Earlier in May, Muffitt led the Lansing Symphony Orchestra in another performance of The Phoenix as part of the LSO's season finale.

Lee Hinkle (Lecturer, Percussion, Co-Director, Percussion Studies) and composer Andrea Clearfield have been selected as the winners of the Global Premiere Consortium Commissioning Project Round 1 Call for Proposals. Hinkle and Clearfield will collaborate to create a new piece for solo marimba and string quartet. Dr. Hinkle will lead a consortium of professional marimbists from around the world to deliver a series of performances of the new work.
Chris Vadala (Director of Jazz Studies/Saxophone Professor) recently performed at the Honors College Convocation and on the Jazz Professors recital during the NextNow fest. He will also be a guest soloist with the Mighty Sounds of Maryland Marching Band during the halftime performance at the October homecoming game. His Eastern Standard Time Jazz Quartet is scheduled to perform at Blues Alley in December, he will also appear later that month with the White House Jazz Band. In addition to upcoming NSO Pops concerts this fall, Vadala will be a guest soloist/conductor at Anderson College (SC), Pensacola College (FL) and SUNY Fredonia (NY).
Eric Kutz (Assistant Professor, Cello) performed 28 concerts this past summer with the Grant Park Orchestra in Chicago. The Grant Park concerts are the nation's last free, municipally funded classical music festival. The orchestra performs at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park. Highlights of the season included Berlioz' Damnation of Faust and the world premiere of Michael Torke's Book of Proverbs. Kutz has performed with the orchestra since 1998.
In May and June, Irina Muresanu (Assistant Professor, Violin) soloed with the Oakville Symphony (Canada), Evanston Symphony (IL), Symphony-by-the-Sea (MA) and performed recitals in Kitchener-Waterloo (CA) and Cape Cod (MA). In July, she was a resident artist in the Newport Music Festival (RI), Halcyon Music Festival (NH) and Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival (VT). Her summer was rounded off by a few days of research at the Violin Society of America/H. Goodkind Collection, thanks to an Oberlin Archive Summer Research Grant.

Ying (Emma) Diao (PhD Ethnomusicology 2015) was awarded a two-year Postdoctoral Fellowship by the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity, in Göttingen, Germany. Her dissertation is on the Christian hymnody of the Lisu people in Southwest China and Myanmar, and she will join the Institute’s Research Program on “Indian and Chinese Religious Networks in South-east Asia.

Jennifer Sterling Snodgrass (PhD Theory, 2002 under Dr. Laszlo Payerle) was named a finalist for the Grammy Music Educator Award and was named Faculty of Distinction at Appalachian State where she is a Professor of Music. Dr. Snodgrass has published numerous books and essays on the subject of music theory pedagogy (most recently with Oxford University Press) and is considered one of the leading experts in this field in the US.
Brendan Schnabel (MM Jazz Saxophone 2016) was hired as the woodwind instructor at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, joining another UMD Jazz Studies alumnus on the faculty, Phil Ravita (MM Jazz Bass '11).
The Inscape Chamber Orchestra premiered Dale Trumbore's (BM Composition 2009) "All the folded wings" at the NextNOW Fest on September 9, 2016.
Keila Rone (Musicology 2014) just received an MA in museum studies at George Washington University and is now an intern at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History.
Mandy Brown (MOS 2012) will be singing Barbarina in Le Nozze di Figaro with Washington National Opera's Emerging Artist Cast on Saturday, October 1st.
Kendra Browne (BM Voice 2014) was just awarded a fellowship as part of the Pipeline Project at Howard, providing her with full-time tuition and fees for the academic year! This fellowship is through a grant from the US Dept. of Education for training SLPs "to serve multicultural communicatively disabled children."
