Chris Gekker becomes the first School of Music faculty to be recognized as a Distinguished University Professor. Over his 42-year career, Gekker has earned national and international acclaim through a wealth of creative achievements as a trumpeter and pedagogue.
“I was completely taken by surprise by this announcement, and really cannot express how honored and moved I feel. Here at the University of Maryland I am surrounded by colleagues that I look up to, that continually inspire me. I am more motivated than ever to do better in my work here,” says Professor of Music Chris Gekker of his Distinguished University Professor Award. The award is a distinction enjoyed by only 7% of tenured faculty and is a recognition not just of excellence, but of impact and significant contribution to the nominee’s field and practice.
Gekker's extraordinary breadth of musical activity, which includes expertise in classical music, popular music, and jazz, along with his remarkably beautiful, warm sound on the instrument, combine to make him one of the greatest trumpeters of our time.
