Thinking of applying to the UMD School of Music this Fall? Since we know you have plenty of questions about auditions and the application process, we’ve asked Jenny Lang, our Assistant Director of Admissions and External Relations, to answer the top admissions questions that she hears from prospective students.

What are the application deadlines for the School of Music?
Students applying to for an undergraduate degree must apply by November 1. The deadline for graduate degrees is December 1.

How do I apply?
If you apply to the undergraduate program, you must apply to both the University of Maryland in addition to the School of Music. UMD has its own application process, and you can access that information here

Applying as a Graduate is a bit different. Grads must submit  the general university application, in order to have access to the Application Supplemental Form, which is the music portion of their application.

Is there any benefit to submitting my application sooner than later?
Sooner is better. Applications are open for undergraduates and  grads. We schedule auditions in the order in which we receive applications, so the sooner you submit your application, the better the chance you will receive an audition on your first choice day.

Also, when you submit your application earlier, there is a higher likelihood of us checking your application and contacting you if we are missing materials. If you wait until the deadline to submit, we are unlikely to have time to notify you of missing materials in your application.

How does the undergraduate application process work for prospective music students at the University of Maryland?
Students in the School of Music must be admitted to the University of Maryland, so we have a dual application process.

For the School of Music Admissions Office and faculty, the most important consideration is the student’s audition, interview or portfolio. For admission to the University of Maryland, academics play an important role. You may find specific information about the Admission Review Factors for university admission here.

How do I sign up for an audition?
We will schedule you for an audition after you submit your application. On the application you may list your first and second choice audition dates based on the available audition dates for your instrument (listed here: http://www.music.umd.edu/prospective_students/auditions). We will send audition notifications via email no later than December 20, 2013.

Can I apply to more than one program within the School of Music?
Yes; but, you must submit two separate applications.  We consider jazz and classical to be two different programs for most of the jazz instruments (piano, drums, bass), although for trumpet and saxophone, students can perform one audition if they wish to be considered for both programs.

Please contact us at musicadmissions@umd.edu if you have questions about applying and auditioning for more than one program!

Can I major in music and something else?
Yes! Approximately 40% of our undergraduate music majors are double majoring in music and something else. And the “something else” can be any other program offered by the university! Some of the programs our students are double majoring in include: engineering, journalism, history, theater, computer science, and business, among others.

Can I submit a recorded audition?
For most programs, students who live more than 250 miles from campus may submit a recorded audition. Please contact us for information on whether or not this is an option for you. Keep in mind though, music merit scholarships and assistantships are only offered to those who audition live. Our faculty also prefer live auditions.

How can I find out more about the program?
Visit us! We offer tours of the School of Music on most weekday mornings at 9:30am by appointment. Contact us at musicadmissions@umd.edu to schedule a visit. We can help you make contact with a faculty member, or we can put you in touch with a current student to “shadow.” Additionally, our admissions representatives are on the road this fall! Please see our schedule of college fairs to see if we’re coming to a location near you!
