Clarinet Academy of America (formerly Clarinet Academy of the South) is a collaboration between Robert DiLutis and D. Ray McClellan, the clarinet professors of The University of Maryland and The University of Georgia respectively. The 5 days of master classes are hosted annually by both university campuses on a rotating basis. This year, the summer of 2014, the Academy will meet, once again, at the beautiful facilities of the Benjamin T. Rome School of Music at Catholic University of America offering training, master classes and performances. Professor’s McClellan and DiLutis will be joined by host Ben Redwine.

The UMD School of Music is pleased to announce that Craig Kier, the former Associate Conductor and Assistant Chorus Master with the Houston Grand Opera, has been appointed Director of the Maryland Opera Studio (MOS). He will join the faculty in Fall of 2014.

Musicology professor Patrick Warfield’s course “Popular Music in Black America” traces the internal development and influence of African American popular music from the Middle Passage to the early 20th century with a special focus on spirituals, ragtime, the blues, early jazz, R&B, Motown, funk, soul and rap.

In December of 2012, Dr. Dora Hanninen, Associate Professor of Music Theory, saw the publication of her book, "A Theory of Music Analysis: On Segmentation and Association Organization" by the University of Rochester Press as part of its Eastman Studies in Music series.
