Excelsa Quartet makes final round of international string quartet competition

Thu, Feb 12, 2015
The School of Music’s Graduate Fellowship Quartet, Excelsa Quartet, was one of five chamber groups that advanced to the final round of the Franz Schubert and Modern Music Chamber Music Competition in Graz, Austria. The only string quartet from the United States invited to participate, Excelsa competed against twenty other string quartets from around the world.
“We entered this competition with the overall goal of expanding our horizons as a quartet,” says Excelsa. “We have mastered new repertoire, gained musical prospective from fantastic musicians from around the globe, and experienced a beautiful Austrian city that is steeped in classical music tradition.”
The group looks forward to returning home and starting new projects, including a performance of Mahler’s Das Lied von Erde with The School of Music’s Graduate Fellowship Wind Quintet District5, and alumni from the Maryland Opera Studio on May 14.
Excelsa’s travel to Austria was made possible by a generous gift from the Steppel family in loving memory of Barbara K. Steppel.
