American composer and pianist Martin Hennessy has been named winner of the first annual University of Maryland (UMD) Opera Composition Contest. As the recipient of this award, Hennessy will receive a commissioning grant to collaborate with librettist Tom Rowan on their adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s The Young King, a parable that addresses wealth and income inequality.

The Library of Congress (LOC) will supply all of the silent films for Music and Film at Maryland, a School of Music concert series that invites student chamber groups to compose film scores and perform them live to silent film. Previously unavailable to the public, these films from the LOC will be presented on future Music and Film concerts with new scores performed and composed by School of Music students.

This past December, the UMD Symphony Orchestra and UMD Chamber Singers provocatively combined excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s "Nutcracker Ballet" with David Lang’s poignant "little match girl passion" for solo chamber choir. The inter-weaving of these two works with imagery by video designer Tim McLoraine seeks a common thread between the lives of those who may have and those who may not.
