Erich Heckscher is currently Principal Bassoon with the National Philharmonic and the Maryland Symphony Orchestras, and an active performer in the DC area. For the 2011-2012 season, he served as Acting Second Bassoon with the National Symphony Orchestra, including a South American tour. He previously held the positions of Principal Bassoon with the Houston Grand Opera Orchestra and Second Bassoon with the Houston Ballet and Alabama Symphony Orchestras, and served as guest Principal Bassoon with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in 2000.
Mr. Heckscher has also performed with the Dallas, Virginia, Richmond and Charleston Symphony orchestras and the Washington National Opera and Atlanta Opera. Locally, he has performed with the Eclipse Chamber Orchestra and the Smithsonian Chamber Players, among may other ensembles. Mr. Heckscher has been Principal Bassoon of the Britt Festival Orchestra in Jacksonville, OR since 2000, and has participated in festivals in Breckenridge, Des Moines, Chautauqua, Durango and Sarasota. He holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music and Southern Methodist University, where his instructors were K. David Van Hoesen, John Hunt and Wilfred Roberts.
Mr. Heckscher is Guest Lecturer of Bassoon at the University of Maryland and has been a woodwind sectional coach for the Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras. From 1998-2000, he was Adjunct Professor of Bassoon at Texas A&M University Commerce.
