Dr. Sandstrom is a Lecturer in Ethnomusicology in the Division of Musicology and Ethnomusicology at the University of Maryland. She holds an M.L.S. in Library Science from the University of Michigan, an M.S. in Audio Technology from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from the University of Maryland. She has certificates in Women's Studies from University of Maryland, Advanced Recording Techniques from Omega Recording Studio, Washington, D.C. and Sound Installation Seminar from Synergetic Audio Concepts. She has been the Co-Chair of the Gender and Sexualities Task Force Committee of the Society for Ethnomusicology and the Treasurer of the International Association of Popular Music - U.S.

She won The Philip Brett Award from the American Musicological Society for her work as co-producer on the award-winning documentary Radical Harmonies. The documentary is about the history of the women's music cultural movement in the U.S. She researches world popular music and identity issues with concentrations in the areas of gender and politics.

Dr. Sandstrom is an experienced sound engineer, having been chief engineer and owner of City Sound Productions and the sound engineer for Robert F. Kennedy Stadium in Washington, D.C. Her interests lie in exploring gender issues within technological fields and the effect of technology on fieldwork. She designed and manages the Technology Lab in the Division of Musicology and Ethnomusicology. She taught sound engineering courses at American University, University of the District of Columbia and Howard University in Washington, D.C.

She has been an active member of the Music and Gender Study group of the ICTM. In this capacity she was co-chair of the SEM panel "Change and Gender Dynamics During Times of War, Violence and Stress: Recent Work of the Music and Gender Study Group" and coordinator of "Gender and the Musics of Death" Convocation of Music and Gender Study.

SShe published articles both on women's music in the United States and women in technology. Among her articles are "Do Women Sound Engineers Handle the Power of Sound Differently?" in Music and Gender edited by Pirkko Moisala and Beverly Diamond and "Women's Music: Passing the Legacy" in Women's Culture in a New Era: A Feminist Revolution? edited by Gayle Kaye.
