The Mighty Sound of Maryland boasts a proud tradition of excellence. We work hard to be "The Best Band in the Land," but we have fun doing it. Enhance your collegiate experience - be a part of the tradition!
Membership
For membership information, complete the Band contact form.
What are the benefits?
- Orientation to College Life Each new member has a "Band Buddy" who is there to help new members get acclimated to the band, campus life, and classes.
- Academic Excellence Despite the busy schedule of marching band season, most members find that their fall grades are best because they manage their time better.
- One Word: Travel Where else will you get to travel around the country cheering your team with 250 friends AND receive academic credit for it?
- Lifetime Memories & Life-Long Friendships You won't find this experience anywhere else. Marching Band is the only class you can participate in every semester with the same people for your entire college career.
All Are Welcomed
We have a place for everyone brass, woodwinds, drumline, silks, and dancers. Each section is integral in forming one band with the same standards at every performance. No auditions are required to join, and if you don't have marching experience, we'll teach you.
How to Join
Marching Band is a 2-credit course. Ask your advisor to sign you up for 2 of the following classes:
MUSC 229F Everyone
MUSC 229G Instrumentalists
MUSC 229I Silks and Dancers
Early Week
Marching season begins one week before school starts. Students move in early, get adjusted to campus life, meet new people, and make new friends. We learn drill and music and most importantly the pride and traditions of being a member of the Mighty Sound of Maryland!
Silk Line and Dance Team

Silk Line provides the visual flare that adds finishing touches to the Marching Band through flag work combined with dance moves. No auditions are required. Just register for two classes: MUSC229F (marching field practice), and MUSC229I (silk sectional).
As with the rest of Marching Band, Silk Line practice starts a week prior to the first day of classes with Early Week. Once classes start, the band and silks have outdoor practices Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 3 to 5 p.m. Silks have sectional practice at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center on Tuesday and Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. On game-day weekends the Silk Line and Marching Band perform both pre-game and half-time shows at Byrd Stadium.

For information on tryouts, practices, and events, visit the Dance Team website at www.umddanceteam.com.
