Malcolm (“Mal”) Niedner is an astrophysicist who lives in Greenbelt with his wife of 36 years, Dianne, and their son. He graduated from Brown University in 1971 with a Bachelor’s degree in Physics, went on to Indiana University and received Master’s and PhD degrees in Astronomy. Mal and family attend St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in College Park, known for its superb music program and at which Mal served as Senior Warden. His classical music interests include works by Debussy, Saint-Saens, and Wagner. A particular music interest of Mal’s is the film scoring by classically trained European (and European descent) composers in the golden age of movies—the 1930s through 1950s. In this area Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Bernard Herrmann loom large in his life.
