The Master of Music (M.M.) degree is designed for qualified students with a Bachelor's degree in music seeking a professional degree in performance, composition, or music education that culminates with a final project.

The course of study usually consists of 31-40 semester hours (depending upon the specific program) in courses approved for graduate credit, at least eighteen of which must be earned on the 600-level or above. The credits are divided among three groups:
- MAJOR STUDIES (10 credits minimum)
- STUDIES IN AREAS SUPPORTIVE OF THE MAJOR (12 credits minimum)
- OTHER STUDIES IN MUSIC (e.g. Ethnomusicology; History/Literature; Music Theory/Analysis) (9 credits minimum). Other Studies in Music will consist of a minimum of 9 credits, with 3 credits in Seminar in Music Research (Bibliography) at the 600 level, 3 credits in History/Literature and 3 credits in Theory/Analysis. If the Major Studies requires a 3-credit bibliography course, the student shall take a 3-credit course outside the major.
In addition to the above-mentioned requirements, all M.M. students must:
- Submit a Scholarly Research Paper written as part of at least one of the three courses in the category Other Studies in Music.
- Pass an Oral Comprehensive Examination of Major Studies and Supportive Area Courses.
- Complete a Final Project (a final recital or program for performance degrees, a final composition for composition degrees or a final project for the education degree).
