EDITION OF BARI, ARCHIVIO DELLA CHIESA DI SAN NICOLA, MS 7 (olim 1), CALENDAR, fols. [1r]-[6v].[1]
DESCRIPTION OF THE MANUSCRIPT: notated choir breviary with calendar and psalter, 2nd half 13th c.-early 14th c.; 419 fols., 335 x 225 mm. Sanctorale begins with St. Andrew (283r). Includes the Parisian neuma triplex[2] and the complete tabula parisiensis (instructions for the weekdays before Christmas, depending on the date of the first Sunday of Advent), 414v-19v. Notated Quem queritis dialogue (see Walter Lipphardt, Lateinische Osterfeiern und Osterspiele, vol. 6 (Berlin: Walter De Gruyter, 1981), p. 221. Some initials were decorated with yellow penwork. The main scribe(s), who were working in Bari from Parisian or at least French exemplars, wrote in brown and red ink. One set of additions is in a small brown script.
EDITORIAL PROCEDURE:
This edition took Rebecca Baltzer’s appendix 1 (in B) as a model. The letters on the left indicate which modern editions of Parisian calendars include the saints of Bari 7: these letters apply to the entire line, except where indicated otherwise. In the manuscript, each month is on a new page. The verses at the top are in black ink and have a red horizontal line drawn through them. A red line follows, giving the number of days in each month: a horizontal yellow line is drawn through it. The three scribes who wrote this calendar use letter shapes and abbreviations consistently. Here abbreviations are resolved in square brackets. The column of Arabic numerals representing the dates in the modern calendar is editorial. There follow columns with the golden number and dominical letter (from which the date of Easter could be determined)[3] and a column giving the date according to the Roman practice. (I have omitted a decorative and redundant column listing the kalends, ides, and nones, which is located between the dominical letters and the Roman dates.) The numbers on either side of the Dominical letters are in red in the manuscript. Although the three columns of this manuscript are the same, in principle, in all calendars, scribes do copy them incorrectly, and thus the information can be used to identify related calendars. Indeed, Paris BNF lat 861 has the same Roman calendar column as Bari 7. For further information on the Dies aegyptiaci, which are also indicated here, see The Oxford Companion to the Year, ed. Bonnie J. Blackburn and Leofranc Holford-Strevens (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1999), p. 590-95.

BNF lat 861: notated missal of Paris of c. 1318-20 with calendar of c. 1300 according to Baltzer. March, April, and May were compared. Manuscript used by Craig Wright along with BNF lat. 1112 to reconstruct the Parisian kyriale.[4] [=H1 Par8].
BNF lat 1112: early 13th-c. notated missal of Paris [=H1 Par4]. All months were compared to a microfilm of the original. The calendar is transcribed and interpreted, with that of Paris, Bibliothèque Ste-Geneviève 93 [fols. 137-84], from the late 12th c., in Norman F. [1]I am grateful to P. Gerardo Cioffari o.p. of the Centro Studi Nicolaiani in Bari for permitting Michel Huglo and I to study the manuscripts of San Nicola in Bari in 1998 and for promptly providing photographs of the calendar. On Bari 7 (olim 1) see Gerardo Cioffari, ed., I codici liturgici in Puglia (Bari: Edizioni Levante, 1986), p. 341-342, and Michel Huglo’s review in Scriptorium: Bulletin codicologique 47 (1993/2), no 463.
[2]See Thomas Kelly, “Neuma triplex,” Acta musicologica 60 (1988): 13, 23. Bari 2 is not the same manuscript as Bari 7 here, though it has the same neuma.
[3]Explained in Andrew Hughes, Medieval Manuscripts for Mass and Office: A Guide to the Organization and Terminology (Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1981), p. 275-80.
[4]Craig Wright, Music and Ceremony at Notre Dame of Paris (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1989), p. 81-97.
[7]With red line drawn through. Note decree of Odo of Sully regarding this feast, which is published in PL 212: 70-72.
[11]With red line drawn through: semiduplum (feast raised to this rank in 1228-49 [BL]). William of Bourges (d. 1209) was canonized in 1218 (V). Judy Louise May Taylor, “Rhymed Offices at the Sainte-Chapelle in the Thirteenth Century: Historical, Political, and Liturgical Contexts” (Ph.D. diss., University of Texas at Austin, 1994), p. 188-89, notes that Brussels, Royal Library, MS IV.472, a supplementary service book with liturgical material for feasts added to the Sainte-Chapelle calendar in the mid 13th century, includes a life of William of Bourges. BNF lat 1112 does not include St. William.
[12]Hilarius and Remigius added later (at 12 January in P); ‘m’ with red line drawn through. Both in BNF lat 1112.
[18]Babylas, bishop of Antioch (d. c.250) was martyred under Decius together with three pupils he had instructed in the Christian faith.
[19]Title used in the Benedictine Rule and other writings, rather than the more usual Conversio Pauli. Also Preiecti in BNF lat 1112.
[26]Bishop of Troyes; not in Maz or BNF lat 1112. Cf. LeroP I, 29-31. A duplex feast in Angers, Bibl. Mun., MS 114, 15th-c. psalter of Angers.
[28]St. Auguli, bishop of Augusta in Brittany, feast 6 February in U. Not in BNF lat 1112. Cf. LeroP I, 136-38: this saint in Chantilly, Musée Condé, MS 7 (1345), a 12th c. psalter from Bremen, Germany.
[29]Martyred with Felicis, Zenonis and others; feast 12 February in Seville; not in Maz or BNF lat 1112.
[32]Abbot of St. Maurice of Agaune; cult in Sens and at Chateau Landon; not in Maz, which has no entries before Cathedra Petri. In BNF lat 11550, 11th-c. psalter-hymnal from St. Germain-des-Près (LeroP II, 107).

[41]Perhaps the martyrs in Egypt under Numerianus recognized in U on 26 February (in his edition, Dubois includes a Dioscori and Nicofori in their number), but cf. note 32 below. Not in Maz or BNF lat 1112.
[43]Martyred in Egypt under Numerianus according to BHL (cf. note 30 above). Cult in Autun, Constance, Utrecht, Worms, Sitten. Not in BNF lat 1112.

[52]Cf. V, p. 474. St. Thomas of Aquinas was canonized in 1323, but the feast postdates the translation of his body to the Dominican church in Toulouse in 1368 and the deposition of one of his arms in the Jacobin church of the rue St. Jacques on 13 July 1369.
